Operations

Train List:
•CSX B880, Georges Creek Turn (Westernport to Morrisons, MD and back) As needed

•CSX B881, Extra Section of Georges Creek Turn As needed

•CSX B889, Barton Turn (Westernport to Barton, MD and back) Sundays Only

•CSX B879, Midland Turn (Westernport to Consol No. 10 and back) Every other Tuesday

•CSX U543, Coal train from United Energy at Consol No.10 site near Frostburg As needed

•CSX E352, Empty coal train to United Energy at Consol No.10 site near Frostburg As needed

All CSX trains that operate on the Georges Creek Subdivision pass through Westernport, MD due to lack of another place to house power on the line. The Georges Creek Turn (B880 and B881) operates with no pattern but one mine usually loads atleast once a month. U543 and E352 are larger unit coal trains that enter and leave the Thomas Subdivision at Westernport to head onto the Georges Creek Subdivision. They operate as unit trains from the mine to the power plant and normally have 6 axle power. CSX B889 operates from Westernport to Barton, MD every sunday to switch out the mines and serve the few industries on the branch. B879 is the Midland turn and switches out the industries. This train operates every other Tuesday to help prevent an overflow of traffic on the line that can hold up mine runs and coal trains. The line has little to no sidings meaning that only one train can operate on the line at one time. No CTC or DTC, the line is all dark territory and train orders are given out by radio. The 10 mile branch see little to no activity these days with a train about every month. I added B889 and B879 to add traffic onto the line so it doesn't seem empty or lacking in action during operating sessions.

About CSX's Georges Creek Subdivision

The Georges Creek Subdivision originally started life out in the 1850s as a mainline for the Cumberland & Pennsylvania Railroad. The Line that went through a coal boom after the Civil War came to an end due to the mines being worked out and union strikes. The C&P was in a hard time and Western Maryland acquires it in 1944 but the full merger did not occur till 1953. The line was then cut a Frostburg, turning it into a branch line. In the Western Maryland era mine runs were run by only four axle units and it was worked almost 6 days a week and more than 100 loads of coal a day. By the 1990s when CSX acquired the line the Clean Air Act and the limited supply of coal in the region the line was worked sporadically in the 1990s. But the Conrail merger in 1999 turned things around for the branch, an increase in demand increased activity on the line. There are two active coal load outs on the line, Tri-Star's load out in Morrison and United Energy's load out in Frostburg, MD.
